The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – Champagne

“One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”

The little prince

Probably one of the most famous kids’ book. Not my favorite one when I was a kid, but I read it again a few days ago and I saw it differently. It isn’t actually only a kids’ book. Indeed, it is still very interesting – and probably even more interesting – to read as a grown up. It resonates in a completely different manner. The magic of the tale is still present, the cuteness of the little prince is still moving but I think you understand better the lessons given as an adult. For instance, several times the little prince naively explains his surprise when he discovers how adults can be vain, greedy and self-centered. And suddenly, we, adult readers, realize how futile could our life be, and how we miss most important.

“The Earth is not just an ordinary planet! One can count, there 111 kings (not forgetting, to be sure, the Negro kings among them), 7000 geographers, 900,000 businessmen, 7,500,000 tipplers, 311,000,000 conceited men−− that is to say, about 2,000,000,000 grown−ups.”

Said like this it may seem a little simplistic, I admit it. However I think the simplest things are those we remember the most. With such a succession of short tales, The little prince is sparkling, fresh, and charming. It makes you jump from one world to another and it makes you go back to your childhood – it’s always good to remember how life seemed magic at that time.  Even though this book presents some rather sad pictures of our world, it is full of optimism and joy. Besides, the watercolors made by the author to illustrate the story convey a feeling of tenderness et vivacity.

Without behaving like the alcoholic the little prince meets during his journey, I think we should pour ourselves a small glass of champagne. Yes, champagne. With its delicate bubbles and freshness, champagne will deliciously pair with the little prince’s adventures around the universe. For instance, I would advise you to taste Champagne Selosse. Anselme Selosse, who took over the vineyard after his father, devote all his passion to produce a champagne respectful of the environment, of the tradition and of the terroir.
